State Library of Queensland is pleased to announce that the 2024 Young Writers Award is open for entries!
First prize is $2,000, Queensland Writers Centre membership, and Kill Your Darlings will publish the winning story. State Library will publish the work of up to 3 runners-up who will be awarded $500 and Queensland Writers Centre membership.
Who is eligible?
All Queensland writers aged 18–25 at 13 May 2024. Stories must be unpublished (this includes print and online).
Is there a theme?
No, you can write about anything. Just keep the word count beneath 2,500.
How much does it cost to enter?
Nothing! Entry is free.

Since 1998, the Young Writers Award has recognised and celebrated a diversity of young and exciting Queensland voices. The award gives young writers all over Queensland an opportunity to tell their stories, make industry connections, and achieve publication.
Entry is open for short stories by Queenslanders aged between 18–25.
- First prize is $2,000 and publication in Kill Your Darlings.
- Up to three runners-up will each receive $500.
